Onaway Island
1911-1920
- 1911- The first permanent structures on the island, the mess hall and kitchen, were built
- 1914- The Onaway Camping Association is formed. Juniper Island was given the name "Onaway", which means 'awake' in an Indian language.
- 1915- More permanent structures were built on Onaway Island. The structures include a small boathouse and a pier. During this time, many other local youth organizations, such as the Appleton YMCA, used the island for camping. Although these organization paid renting fees, many of the repairs and construction costs were paid by S.F. Shattuck. During the next 10 years, three additional wooden cabins were built for storage, classrooms, and living space.
- 1919- Mary Dick, more commonly referred to as "Ma", took over the kitchen duties from Bertha Spiegelberg. Over the years, Ma became a very influential part of Onaway. Brigade boys were given assigned chores each day, one of which was helping in the kitchen. Paid assistants, known as chore boys, did not exist until 1938. Ma held the position as Camp Cook for twenty-eight consecutive years.
